Course Description:

EPOC is offering two environmental forensics courses (live webinars) on November 29, 2022 and December 6, 2022. Both courses have each been approved for 4 hours of CECs in CT. These presentations are designed to introduce participants to the principles of environmental forensic science and survey the major applications and techniques for organic chemicals. The participant will learn about the sources and composition of commonly encountered chemicals and products in the environment; forensic sampling and analysis techniques; and data analysis and presentation. Subtopics will be illustrated with case studies from each of the presenters’ practices.

Each course is designed to stand alone but the two courses form a more comprehensive look at the topic. This registration is for Course 2 which will focus on synthetic organic chemicals; it will begin with a very brief overview of environmental forensics and then focus on forensic methods for the following chemical groups: PCBs, dioxins and furans, chlorinated solvents, and PFAS. For each chemical group the course will cover basic chemistry of the group, contamination sources, analytical methods, fingerprinting methods, and forensic investigation case studies. The course will conclude with development of environmental forensic conceptual site models and allocations and a survey of advanced and emerging environmental forensic methods.

The objectives of Course 2 are below and the agenda is here.

  • Provide an overview of environmental forensics goals and applications
  • Learn about PCB, dioxins and furans, chlorinated solvent and PFAS chemistry, contamination sources, and forensic investigation methods
  • Learn forensic data analysis techniques beyond qualitative fingerprinting – i.e., quantitative forensics, statistics, chemometrics
  • Learn about developing forensic conceptual site models and contaminant source allocation
  • Review a survey of emerging and advanced methods in environmental forensics

David M. Mauro, M.S., President/Senior Scientist, META Environmental, Inc., 1000 Turk Hill Road Fairport, NY 14450, 585-364-0728, https://www.metaenv.com/

Mr. Mauro is an environmental and analytical chemist with more than 30 years of experience in the field. He is co-founder and president of META Environmental, Inc. (META), a nationally recognized environmental consulting company. Mr. Mauro has served as the project manager or senior technical consultant for dozens of projects involving design and implementation of site characterization, source identification and cost allocation, treatability studies, environmental fate and transport, statistical and quality control assessments, and remedial designs under CERCLA, RCRA, and other programs.

Mr. Mauro has extensive experience in the characterization, fate and transport properties, analytical methods, and quality assurance procedures at sites contaminated with refined petroleum products, former manufactured gas plant (MGP) wastes, wood preservatives (creosote and PCP), PCBs, dioxins and furans, dielectric fluids, and solvents. He has been an expert witness for cases involving coal tar and petroleum releases, PCB and dioxin and furan contamination, fires and explosions of PCB fluids and PCB-containing materials, and other industrial issues.

Deborah Chiavelli, Ph.D., Managing Scientist, Anchor QEA, LLC, 123 Tice Blvd., Suite 205, Woodcliff Lake, NJ 07677, (201) 930-9890, https://www.anchorqea.com/

Dr. Deborah Chiavelli is a managing scientist with Anchor QEA, LLC with more than 18 years of experience in contaminated site investigation including more than forty environmental forensics investigations. Much of her current forensic work involves former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites and other sites with hydrocarbon releases including crude and refined petroleum products and refined coal tar products. Her forensic investigations have also included source assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and furans, pesticides, and metals. Dr. Chiavelli’s approach focuses on development and application of robust, site-specific, and quantitative fingerprinting tools for source identification and allocation.
